Director, Sawyer Free Library

On January 2, 2005, I became director of the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library, formally a private institution but in reality the public library for the city of Gloucester, Massachusetts. This was a dramatic change in my career up to that point, which had focused entirely on academic education and research, and on large university libraries.
